Safety first when it comes to deer hunting

Cool temps and frosty mornings signal the start of winter and the long-held ritual of deer hunting in our area. With the deer opener starting this weekend in North Dakota and Minnesota, here are a few safety tips to consider before you head outdoors.

·         Don't rely on your guns safety. Treat all firearms as if they're loaded and ready to fire.

·         Never cross a fence, climb a tree/stand or jump a ditch with a loaded gun.

·         Wear hunter orange so you can be seen.

·         Don't forget about your canine friends. Get an orange vest for your dog if he/she accompanies you.

·         Don't shoot unless absolutely sure of your target and what is beyond it.

·         Be courteous. Once a hunter is aware of your presence, don't make unnecessary noise to disturb wildlife. 

·         Avoid alcoholic beverages before and during shooting.

·         Carry a spare set of dry clothing. Use layering techniques to prevent moisture while retaining body warmth. Always bring rain gear.  Dress appropriately and be prepared for the worst possible weather conditions.

·         Carry a first-aid kit.

·         Tell someone where you're going and when you plan to return. 

Not a hunter? Be conscious of your clothing choices so to not blend into the surroundings. Also, make noise! Whistle, sing or carry on a conversation as you walk to alert hunters to your presence.
